Mother and Daughter in Yeruham
"My daughter Sienna is a total athlete; she plays football like your Yossi Benayoun. My wife Kim designs carpets and has them woven in India." David told me this during the long conversations we had before their family visit from London. "Since you mentioned Yossi Benayoun, why don't you bring two Liverpool footballs with you?"
The boys and girls football team of the Yeruham Community Center were happy to cooperate. The team, which is sponsored by the Real Madrid football club through the Peres Peace Center, showed up fully dressed and equipped. Sienna got to play with her Israeli colleagues and even scored a goal.
Selima, a handsome 30-year old Bedouin woman and mother of six lives not far from there, in a rickety tin shed. Selima weaves carpets and is trying very hard to break through traditional boundaries. "Education is the foundation of any progress," says Selima, who is now completing her high school diploma. For Kim, the London-based carpet designer, and her three daughters, the meeting with Selima in the desert was a profound lesson in recognizing the strength of these hidden women.
